温泉の名物

名物のおとずれ生外郎と鶏卵せんべい
長門湯本温泉名物の「おとずれ生外郎」は、北海道産小豆を使用し、わらび粉が入ったぷるんとした食感で、甘さ控えめの手作りの外郎。小豆と抹茶の2種類がある。そして、「鶏卵せんべい」も忘れてはならない名物。養鶏が盛んな長門の自然の恵みをいっぱいに受けて育った新鮮な有精卵と、蜂蜜をふんだんに使ったまろやかなカステラ風味のせんべい。素朴な味が人気の秘密だ。

温泉のあれこれ

萩藩主も浸かった温泉
開湯は1427年で、大寧寺の住職が、住吉大明神のご神託によって発見したと伝わる。開湯時に発見した源泉は現在も湧き出し、言い伝えを裏付けるように所有権も同寺のものとなっている。かつての浴場は、武士や僧侶が入る「礼湯」と、一般の民が入る「恩湯」に分かれていたが、現在はもちろん区別はない。江戸時代には、温泉のそばにお茶屋「清音亭」が置かれ、藩主もたびたび湯治に訪れていた。
