温泉の名物

蔵王温泉の「稲花餅」
蔵王権現へ豊年万作を願い、捧げた重ね餅に由来するという、笹の葉にのった「稲花餅」は、古くから蔵王温泉街の土産物屋で、名物として売られてきた。中に甘さ控えめのこし餡が入り、黄色く染めたお米の粒が飾られた、3つのかわいらしい白いお餅だ。お餅の下に敷く笹の葉は、蔵王の山からとってきたクマザサの葉を使っており、お餅を食べると、笹の葉の風味が口の中にほのかに香る。

温泉のあれこれ

プリンシプルな男も愛した蔵王
第二次世界大戦後、吉田茂の側近としてGHQとの折衝にあたり、「従順ならざる唯一の日本人」といわれた白洲次郎。生涯在野を貫き、東北電力の会長をしていた時代に、蔵王を「東洋のサンモリッツ」にすべく、大型ロープウェイの建設等を提唱し、蔵王スキー場の一角に小さな山荘「ヒュッテ・ヤレン」を建て、スキーを楽しんだという。現在、「ヒュッテ・ヤレン」は「旧白洲次郎山荘」として、復元工事が始められている。
