温泉の名物

斜面の焼畑で育てられる赤かぶの漬物
「温海かぶ」とは、鶴岡市温海地域の小さな集落の斜面で、400年以上前から栽培されている赤かぶ。徳川将軍家に献上したという記録も残っている。表面が赤紫色で、白かぶに比べ、旨み成分であるグルタミン酸を約2～4倍も含み、その旨みとほどよい辛味、歯ざわりのよさが特徴。このかぶを、塩、砂糖、酢だけで漬けたのが「温海かぶ漬」で、あつみ温泉の代表的なお土産品となっている。甘酸っぱく、さわやかな辛味があとをひく。

温泉のあれこれ

与謝野晶子とあつみ温泉
古くから松尾芭蕉ら文人墨客が数多く訪れたあつみ温泉。与謝野晶子も、夫・鉄幹を亡くした1935年、心の痛手を癒すようにここを訪れた。そして10首ほど残している。その中の1首「さみだれの出羽の谷間の朝市に傘して売るはおほむね女」は名物朝市を詠んだもの。この歌碑が萬国屋傍らに刻まれている。温泉で元気を取り戻したのか、その年には「与謝野寛遺稿集」の刊行や「源氏物語」の現代語訳に着手するなど精力的に活動している。
