Tourist Attraction Information

In spring, Eboshiyama Park is famous for its Senbonzakura cherry blossoms. There are many tourist orchards in the surrounding area, where you can enjoy cherry and grape picking.

温泉の名物

赤湯温泉の名物唐辛子2種
赤湯温泉には唐辛子の特産品が2つある。ひとつは虎屋・佐藤雷右エ門の「石焼唐からし」。八身という大ぶりの唐辛子を使い､麻種等の草の実を小麦粉で練ってから唐辛子に詰め炭火で焼いたもので、江戸時代から続く名物。元来は焼いた石に南蛮をはさんで焼いたもので、主婦の手内職として始められた。もうひとつは大沼唐がらし店の「唐がらし粉」。唐辛子に青海苔、ごま、山椒を加えた、いわば三味唐辛子で、明治初期からの伝統の品。

温泉のあれこれ

米沢藩の御殿湯として歴史ある湯
開湯900年余の古湯で、伊達領時代を経て上杉領となり、米沢藩時代には藩の湯治場となり、殿様が入る箱湯として保護されるとともに、藩公認の遊興の場所として栄えた。なかでも「上杉の御湯　御殿守」は、2代藩主上杉定勝の時代に、上杉家赤湯御殿の用人（守番）に任命されて以来、上杉家の別荘となり、温泉旅館として今に至る。米沢藩中興の名君上杉鷹山公はことのほか赤湯を愛し、丹泉八勝（赤湯八景）を画家に描かせたほど。
