Tourist Attraction Information

温泉の名物

通年食べられる幻の高級魚クエ料理
クエは、本州中部以南に生息するハタ科の魚で、成魚は1m、30～50kgにもなる。特に黒潮洗う紀伊水道の磯に棲むものを「天然紀州本クエ」と呼び、漁獲量が少ないため幻の魚と呼ばれ、高級魚となっている。見た目のグロテスクさとは異なり、上品で深みのある美しい白身は脂が乗り、ゼラチン質をたっぷり含む皮やアラの味はフグにも勝るとされる。白浜温泉では安定供給が可能になり、1年中様々なクエ料理を味わうことができる。

温泉のあれこれ

日本三古湯のひとつ白浜温泉に歴史あり
白浜温泉は、古代「牟婁の温湯」と呼ばれていた。飛鳥時代には斉明天皇らも入湯し、万葉歌人・額田王も訪れている。そして悲劇の舞台ともなった。大化の改新後、中大兄皇子は、有馬皇子を天皇に反乱を企てたとして捕らえる。無実の有間皇子は白浜温泉に護送され絞首刑に。平安時代には一般の貴族らも湯治に赴くようになる。江戸時代には、「蟻の熊野詣」と称されるほど賑わった熊野詣の参道にあたる白浜温泉は、庶民にも愛された。
