Tourist Attraction Information

A hot spring resort for tourists. The hot springs that spring up on the opposite bank of the Camel Rock in Kinomatsushima are popular as open-air baths with spectacular views that can only be reached by boat.

望郷詩人・佐藤春夫も愛したサンマ寿司
マグロ・カツオで有名な勝浦漁港はサンマ漁も盛ん。新宮市出身の佐藤春夫は代表作「秋刀魚の歌」で、故郷のサンマのことを書いている。三陸沖から南下したサンマは、熊野灘に達する頃にはほどよく脂が落ち、東紀州が誇る郷土食・サンマ寿司の格好の材料となる。開いたサンマを塩漬けにし、ゆずなど柑橘類の搾り酢で締めたこの押し寿司は、丸ごと1匹使うので「サンマの姿寿司」とも呼ばれ、店によってはお頭付きで提供される。

温泉のあれこれ

往時は捕鯨、今はホエールウォッチング
那智勝浦の隣町、太地は古式捕鯨発祥の地として名高く、かつては捕鯨で栄えたクジラの町。時代の流れで捕鯨禁止となった今は、ホエールウォッチングの町として知られてるようになった。太平洋を回遊するクジラは、春から夏にかけて熊野灘にやってくる。体長16mにも達するマッコウクジラの群れが回遊するシーンや、ジャンプするイルカにめぐり会えるかもしれない。クジラの泳ぐ海域まで漁船で往復し、その途中、海釣りも楽しめる。
