湯西川温泉は平家落人の隠れ里と伝わる。落ち延びた人々はともに火を囲み、その日の獲物や山の恵みを分かち合ったといい、湯西川では古伝にちなんだ囲炉裏料理や焼き石料理でもてなされる。食材は、イワナやヤマメなどの渓流魚や沢ガニ、サンショウウオに、野鳥や鹿、熊なども加わり、こんがり焼いた焼き味噌が香ばしいアクセントになる。厳しい自然の中に伝わる伝承と歴史のロマンに浸りつつ、じっくりと味わいたい。

湯西川温泉に伝わる平家落人伝説と史跡
山深い湯西川温泉は、壇ノ浦の戦いに敗れ、川治の鶏頂山に身を潜めた平忠実と家臣団が、さらに追っ手を逃れてこの地の高台の臼の平に隠れ住んだことに始まるとの伝承がある。村人は後世まで人目につく鯉のぼりや焚火を控え、鳴き声をたてる鶏や犬を飼わず、世をはばかって暮らしたといい、村内には「平家塚」や「高房神社」など、伝説ゆかりのスポットが点在する。心地よい名湯とともに、ひととき歴史のロマンに浸りたい。
