温泉の名物

日本でも稀少な墨のように真っ黒い湯
旅館「大出館」所有の源泉には、黒湯としては珍しい、湯の花による真っ黒な湯、通称「墨の湯」が存在する。鉄分を多く含むが、普通、鉄分の湯は暗赤茶の色をしたものがほとんど。そのため黒湯は珍重される。不思議なことに雨の日は黒い色が濃くなるとされ、鉄分なので貧血の人には飲用で効果が期待できる。少し湯に浸かると黒い湯の花が体に付着するが、これが人気で、真っ黒に染まったタオルを旅の思い出に持ち帰る人も多い。

温泉のあれこれ

「温泉ふるまい」がうれしい湯の祭り
「古式湯まつり」は、温泉の恵みに感謝し、豊かな温泉の湧出と末永い繁栄を祈願する行事。元湯で汲んだ「御神湯」を塩原八幡宮に奉納した後、狩衣や巫女の白装束を身にまとった人たちによる「分湯行列」が温泉街を練り歩き、湯守が御神湯を塩原温泉郷の6地区に分ける「分湯式」が執り行われる。さらには古式湯まつりが行われる指定日は、温泉の恵みに感謝し、「温泉ふるまい」として、宿泊施設の日帰り入浴が無料開放される。
