Tourist Attraction Information

Shiobara Valley is home to the 320m long Momijidani Suspension Bridge and hiking trails, and the surrounding area is dotted with the Shiobara Ten Famous Waterfalls.

Highlights

It is the collective name for the "Eleven Shiobara Baths" that are dotted around the valley along the Hoki River, and has a history of over 1,000 years. There are also plenty of bathing facilities for day trips.

温泉の名物

具の種類が豊富な新しいご当地グルメ
塩原温泉の新ご当地グルメ「とて焼き」は、丸く焼いたほどよい厚さのスポンジのような生地に具をはさみ、紙で巻いたスイーツで、クレープのように食べ歩きができる。「とて」とは昔、トテ馬車に使われていたラッパ型のクラクションのこと。生地には地元産の卵と牛乳を使い、クレープでもどら焼きでもパンケーキでもない感じに仕上げている。さらには餡、生クリーム、栗、そば、チリチキン、塩原大根など、様々な具があるのも魅力。

温泉のあれこれ

塩原温泉の魅力のひとつ・文学散歩
塩原街道が開通した明治以降、夏目漱石、谷崎潤一郎、斉藤茂吉ら多くの作家が塩原温泉を訪れ、作品を書いてきた。1897年から連載された尾崎紅葉の「金色夜叉」もこの地で生まれた。塩原の風景も1900年の「続金色夜叉」に描かれている。田山花袋は1918年出版の「温泉めぐり」で、塩原十一湯を「温泉郷」と評し、これが温泉郷という表現の最初だとされる。このように塩原は文学の町としても有名で、歌碑や句碑などが点在している。
