This hot spring was designated as the first national health resort. Its milky white sulfur spring contains a lot of metasilicic acid and is known for its excellent skin-beautifying properties.

温泉の名物

甘みと塩味が絶妙、つるやの「塩羊羹」
1958年以来、塩羊羹一筋に手作りで変わらぬ味を作り続けている「つるやの塩羊羹本舗」。ここの塩羊羹は湯元温泉の定番おすすめ土産となっている。北海道十勝産の小豆を使い、グラニュー糖と塩、寒天のみで練り上げている。上品な甘さとさっぱりとした口当たり、つるりとした触感が人気で、棹タイプと一口サイズがある。午前中には完売してしまうため、電話予約をした方が無難。

温泉のあれこれ

誰でも利用できる、お寺に引かれた温泉
温泉街からほど近い温泉寺は、庫裏に温泉を引いていて、誰でも入浴できる。4月下旬～11月下旬頃まで日帰り温泉として利用可能。この寺は世界遺産日光山輪王寺の別院で、日光開山の勝道上人が788年にこの温泉を発見し、病苦を救う薬師如来を安置したのが始まりという歴史があり、湯元のルーツとでもいうべき霊験あらたかな湯とされる。湯上がり後は畳敷きの休憩室で、お茶菓子とお茶のサービスを受け、ゆっくりと休める。
