海の王様、伊勢エビと巨大なS級サザエ
南伊豆は、伊勢エビの水揚げが県内一を誇る。刺身と、殻のまま背開きにし、付け焼きにした「鬼殻焼」が特に人気。9月15日頃からの伊勢エビ漁の解禁を皮切りに、「伊勢エビまつり」が催される。もうひとつの名産「下田S級サザエ」は、下田の沖合い神子元島周辺の海域で、潜水漁で漁師がひとつひとつ手で獲った、400g以上の特大サザエ。香ばしい磯の香り、そして味わい深い甘味が何とも美味で、壺焼きや刺身、サザエ丼が特に人気だ。

伊豆半島のジオサイトを紹介する施設
「日本ジオパーク」に認定された伊豆半島。「南伊豆ジオパークビジターセンター」は、火山活動で生まれた伊豆の地形を紹介する施設だ。活断層・石廊崎活断層がのびる絶景ポイント・奥石廊にあり、溶岩の洞窟や、亀の甲のようにひび割れた柱状節理など、伊豆ならではの風景が見られる。夕陽の絶景ポイントでもあり、「夕陽のカフェ」も併設している。伊豆半島の風景を切り取ったお菓子「ジオ菓子」は、お土産に喜ばれそう。
