This hot spring is one of the most abundant in eastern Izu, with 18 artesian springs. The steaming hot springs and hot spring towers are symbolic sights.

温泉の名物

熱川の家庭で古くから作られたおやつ
小麦粉と自然薯を練って作った餅にごまだれや餡をつけていただく、農漁家で食されていた素朴なおやつが「へらへら餅」。上新粉で作られる場合もあるが、形がうすっぺらいのが特徴。名前は形状からとも、名主宅でこれを食した殿様が、あまりのおいしさに頬が緩み、へらへらと笑ったとする逸話からともいわれる。この「へらへら餅」は、奈良本地区にある「山桃茶屋」で味わえる。

温泉のあれこれ

太田道灌が発見し神の加護を信じた温泉
江戸城の築城で有名な室町時代の武将・太田道灌は、熱川温泉の開祖とも伝えられる。天城山に巻狩りに出かけた道灌は、川面より煙が立つ濁り川で猿やイノシシが傷を癒すのを見かけ、自らも湯浴みする。するとたちどころに巻狩りの疲れが癒え、体中に生気がみなぎったことから、この地に神の加護があると確信し、ここから石を切り出して江戸城に用いたといい、「熱川温泉石曳き道灌まつり」では築城当時の石曳きが再現されている。
