温泉の名物

出雲型勾玉作りを伝承
この地の名にちなむ勾玉は、太陽と月が重なりあった形を表し、大いなる宇宙の崇拝を象徴している。そして、穴は祖先とのつながりを意味している。古代出雲では花仙山で産出されためのうを使い、現在の松江市玉湯町の近辺で玉造職人によって作られ、出雲国造と朝廷に献上を許され全国に広まっていった。「いずもまがたまの里伝承館」でその技を引き継いで作られる現代の勾玉は、縁結びのアクセサリーとして人気となっている。

温泉のあれこれ

神々も集う歴史ある日本最古の湯の一つ
玉造は古代、勾玉を作る玉作りの里であったことからその地名が付いた。この湯は神代の時代、大国主命と共に国造りをした少彦名命が発見したと伝えられる。「出雲風土記」には「ひとたび濯げば形容端正しく、再び浴すれば万の病ことごとに除こる」とある。そのため「神の湯」とも呼ばれ、川辺の湯は市の様な賑わいだったとか。さらには「枕草子」にも登場し、江戸時代には松江藩が別荘「お茶屋」を設け、代々の藩主が静養に訪れた。
