温泉の名物

名物の露天風呂砂湯は西の横綱の格付け
湯原ダムの下にある巨大な共同露天風呂「砂噴き湯：砂湯」は、湯原温泉を代表する名所。足下噴出源泉露天風呂で、川底から砂を噴きながら温泉が湧くことから、砂噴き湯（砂湯）の名で呼ばれるようになった。この砂湯は、湯原温泉の古代からの風呂の様子を唯一残すもので、市の文化財指定。1977年には旅行作家の会代表の野口冬人氏から、日本温泉協会発行の「温泉」紙上の諸国露天風呂番付で、西の横綱にランク付けされた。

温泉のあれこれ

たたら製鉄と湯原温泉の歴史
湯原温泉のシンボルは、ダムの堤防を見上げる砂湯という巨大な露天風呂。豊富な湯量から、この自然の露天風呂には人が集い、四季折々の自然を楽しみながらお湯に浸かることができる。その歴史も古く、この地域は古墳時代から「たたら製鉄」の盛んな場所で、史跡や金山（製鉄後の屑を積んでできた小山）が多く存在する。たたら場は重労働で、多くの人手が必要だったため、労働者たちは疲れた体を癒す場として湯原温泉を訪れていた。
