甘くて食感がよい下津井沖の真ダコ
下津井沖で水揚げされる真ダコは、「下津井ダコ」として有名。1年でおいしくない時期は3日しかないといわれるほど年中おいしく食せるが、秋から冬のタコは「寒ダコ」と呼ばれ、1年のうちでも最も身が締まり、旨味が凝縮されるため、下津井沖では11月がタコ漁が最盛期となる。刺身、唐揚げ、タコ飯と食べ方も様々で、下津井ダコの足を広げ、寒風に晒す「干しダコ」は、下津井地域の冬の風物詩となっている。

瀬戸内に面する下津井港は、新鮮な魚が豊富に水揚げされる漁港。江戸時代の半ばには、内海航路の船や北前船などがひっきりなしに往来。さらに四国への渡海場として金比羅参りの人々も多く訪れた。今も町には当時の商家やニシン蔵などが大切に保存され、漁師町の雰囲気を伝えている。また海辺にそびえる鷲羽山は、瀬戸内海や瀬戸大橋を一望できる景勝地。晴れた日には四国をも望むことができ、絶好の夜景スポットとしても知られる。
