温泉の名物

この海域ならではの極上の「柳カレイ」
村上市周辺は多くの河川が集まって海に注ぐ場所で、この海域の「柳カレイ」（ヤナギムシガレイ・笹カレイ）は、淡白でありながら深く繊細な旨味があり、しっとりとした身のおいしさから、カレイの女王とされ、古くから高級魚とされてきた。好魚場にあっても一時は大変稀少になり、幻の魚ともいわれたが、漁業関係者の尽力により数を取り戻しつつある。上品に香り立つ一夜干しや、産地ならではのすしや刺身はこの上なく美味。

温泉のあれこれ

湯煙の噴湯はなごみの温泉卵スポット
瀬波温泉は、1904年に石油掘削のための作業の際に湧出した約95度の湯。温泉街の高台の硫黄の香る噴湯公園では、源泉のやぐらが高く昇る湯煙に霞んでいる。その下では源泉を使って温泉卵を作ることができる。湯が流れる木枠の網に卵を入れ、木蓋をして約15分で半熟、とろぷるの温泉卵なら約20分。固ゆでにするなら約30分。傍らには、この場所で詠まれた与謝野晶子の句碑もあり、散策の休憩がてらに卵持参で楽しむ人も見られる。
