温泉の名物

米どころ越後の名物、とち餅とごま餅
妙高燕温泉のお土産屋では、素朴なとち餅とごま餅が売られている。とち餅は、手間暇かけてアクを抜いた栃の実を、餅米とともに蒸してついたもの。独特のほろ苦さは餡との相性がいい。ごま餅は、生地がグレーに見えるほど、ギッシリと黒ごまが練り込まれている餅。こちらも餡が入っている。温泉街を歩きながら食べるのも楽しい。

温泉のあれこれ

無料の露天風呂、黄金の湯と河原の湯
妙高登山の基地になっている燕温泉には、2ヶ所の無料露天風呂がある。登山道に近い「黄金の湯」と、深い谷間にある「河原の湯」だ。温泉街から徒歩約5分の場所にある露天風呂が黄金の湯で、男湯と女湯は岩で仕切られている。総滝につながる歩道の吊り橋の脇の沢にあるのが「河原の湯」。谷底の流れのすぐ側にある混浴の露天風呂で、湯船は岩や石で組まれた風情ある造り。燕温泉に来たなら、この2つの露天風呂はぜひ入って帰りたい。
