温泉の名物

大湯温泉小唄と大湯芸妓
かつて最盛期の大湯温泉には芸者置屋が多数あり、100人もの芸妓たちがいたという。その当時生まれたのが「大湯温泉小唄」で、若宮桂子がレコードを出している。「深山ウグイス湯の香にのせて」と歌い継がれ、「チャラリコ、チャラリコ、ザブランラン」と入浴シーンを表現している。今でも旅館の宴会場では、小唄に合わせて芸妓たちが舞を披露してくれる。

温泉のあれこれ

江戸時代の銀山開発と越後大湯温泉
大湯温泉は718年、僧である行基が開湯したとされ、1300年の歴史を持つ。江戸時代には只見川の上流で銀が発見され、上田銀山・白峰銀山という鉱山が開かれ、この地は諸国から集まった人たちで賑わった。大湯温泉は、銀山道中にあった8ヶ所の宿場中、随一の湯量と泉質を誇っていたという。明治以降は、近郷農民の湯治場として親しまれた。
