Tourist Attraction Information

The base for sightseeing in Unzen, including Unzen Jigoku, Mount Unzen, and the Unzen Ropeway. It is also close to Shimabara Castle and Hayasaki Strait, where you can go dolphin watching.

Highlights

This is the first hot spring resort in Japan to be designated as a National Park. The spring contains sulfur and is highly acidic, with both milky white water and clear water.

温泉の名物

雲仙温泉の硫黄のにおいでうまさ倍増
白い噴煙と硫黄の匂いが立ち込める雲仙地獄。この蒸気で蒸し上げる玉子は、温泉地ならではの味わい。ホッカホカで弾力のある白身から硫黄の香りがほのかにする。なお、付属の塩は温泉でできたもの。そして雲仙を代表する銘菓のひとつが「湯せんぺい」。旧島原藩主松平公が考案したもので、小麦粉・卵・砂糖に温泉水を加えて焼き上げる、ほんのり甘くサクサクとした軽い歯ざわりのせんべいだ。

温泉のあれこれ

幕府の禁教令と雲仙地獄の悲話
雲仙地獄はキリシタン殉教悲史の舞台となったことで有名。1625年、藩主松倉重政が、幕府の命によりキリスト教徒の迫害を開始。1627年、弾圧はさらに厳しくなり、1630年までの改宗を迫り、「山入り」と称して教徒を温泉火坑に送り熱湯責めをさせた。こうして信者26人が殉教。その魂を鎮めるため、毎年5月に雲仙殉教祭が行われる。県内外から約2000人の信者が集い、雲仙地獄のキリシタン殉教碑まで巡礼し、賛美歌で祈りを捧げる。
