温泉の名物

熊の湯温泉のおすすめ土産
根曲がり竹はチシマ笹のたけのこで、志賀高原の特産品。地元熊の湯スキー場で旬のうちに採取し、丁寧に瓶詰めにしたものがお土産として並ぶ。自家製・数量限定の人気商品で、痛みやすいため、必ずその日の内に加工される。ホテルで販売されている、熊の湯の温泉を溶かし込んだ石鹸も上品な香りで人気の品だ。「熊よけベル」は、ここならではのお土産といえる。

温泉のあれこれ

佐久間象山が発見した熊の湯温泉
1848年、江戸時代末期の松代藩の御用係佐久間象山が、志賀高原の森林伐採と植林計画のために実地踏査をした際に発見し、開湯を勧めたと伝えられる。「沓野日記」で、「手に浸してこれを試むるに、果してよき温泉なり」と記し、草津温泉のようであると藩への調査報告をしている。湯の名は、手負いの熊が谷間の湯で傷を癒したという故事から「熊の湯」と付いたとされる。1882年、山本弥曽吉が宿浴場を設置した。
