温泉の名物

りんごで育った霜降り信州牛
上林温泉では、地元のブランド牛「信州牛」を名物料理にしている宿も多い。「信州牛」は、特製のりんご入り発酵飼料を主として用いて丹念に育て、「りんごで育った信州牛」とうたっている良質な和牛。上質な脂ときめの細かい肉質で旨味があるので、ステーキは肉本来の味を引き立たせるため、ソースは使わず塩だけで調理すると味が一層際立つとされる。ほかにもすき焼きや、陶板ステーキ、しゃぶしゃぶなどで霜降りの肉が楽しめる。

温泉のあれこれ

多くの文人墨客が訪れた上林温泉
上林温泉は、夏目漱石や志賀直哉、林芙美子、与謝野晶子、斎藤茂吉、川端康成、井上靖、井伏鱒ら多くの文人に愛された。なかでも壺井栄とはゆかりが深い。文部大臣賞受賞の小説「母のない子と子のない母を」は、上林温泉にて3ヶ月で書き上げた。代表作「二十四の瞳」の執筆も、ここの温泉と同じ向きに机を置いて書いた、と記されている。温泉街には、周辺や志賀高原にゆかりの文人や画家などの作品を集めた「志賀山文庫」がある。
