温泉の名物

志賀高原で星空ウォッチング
志賀高原では、周囲を山に囲まれているので、1年を通して満天の星を観測できる。標高1600mの発哺温泉からは星との距離が近く、手をのばせば星に届きそうな気すらする。天の川もはっきり見える志賀高原の星空は、普段星を見上げることもない都会の人間には感動的だ。星座早見表を持参して、夜空に展開する星座を、ひとつひとつ確かめながら過ごしてみよう。

温泉のあれこれ

「ほっぽ」の名の由来
1841年の開湯された発哺温泉。明治期より「ホッポ」と呼ばれるようになったが、その名の由来は、水蒸気が吹き上げるポッポという音、あるいは、「コンコン」と湧き出る温泉の音を「ホッポホッポ」と表現したともいわれている、また、この地まで長い道のりを歩き、やっと辿り着いた旅人が「日は暮れる足は疲れる腹は減るホッポホッポと汗は出にけり」と詠ったことからついたという説もあり、興味深い。
