温泉の名物

木地業者が子に与えた素朴な伝統こけし
鳴子では、約200年前に木地業者が子にこけしを作って与え、山村の子どもの玩具として伝統を重ねた。「鳴子こけし」は、首を回すと音が鳴り、張った肩に、中ほどが細く、裾広がりの胴が特徴。「重ね菊」や「菱菊」の模様が多く、瓜実形の頭に、前髪とあどけない表情が描かれる。宮城県内5系統とともに「宮城伝統こけし」として国の伝統的工芸品に指定。白木に鮮やかな筆跡で描かれた乙女姿の愛らしさが、今また人気を呼んでいる。（出展：鳴子温泉郷観光協会）

温泉のあれこれ

「鳴子」にまつわる源義経の伝承
源頼朝に追われ平泉へ向かった源義経は、身重の正室を連れていたとの伝承がある。亀割峠で弁慶が産婆役を務め「亀若丸」が誕生。亀若丸は産声をあげなかったが、河原の湯で産湯につかるとようやく泣き声をあげ、以来この地を「啼子（なきこ）」と呼び、現在の地名に繋がったという。鳴子温泉神社にその碑があるほか、陣ヶ森で野宿する一行に猿が甘酒を振る舞った話、「星沼」「尿前」の地名など、義経にまつわる数々の伝説がある。（出展：鳴子温泉郷観光協会）
