温泉の名物

参勤交代の時代の茶屋まんじゅう
「伊達藩足軽まんじゅう」は、小豆餡を独自のタレでのばした皮で包んで蒸し上げた、素朴な蒸しまんじゅうで、鎌先温泉でも人気のお土産。参勤交代の道中、伊達藩の足軽たちが峠の茶屋でこのまんじゅうを食べたところ足が軽くなったといわれ、仲間うちで評判となり、いつしか「足軽まんじゅう」と呼ばれるようになった。そしてそのおいしさから伊達藩の名物と認められ、「伊達藩足軽まんじゅう」の名が許されたと伝わっている。

温泉のあれこれ

弥治郎こけしの工人集落
弥治郎こけし村は、全国に知られた弥治郎こけしの工人集落。鎌先温泉から約2kmほど山間に入ったこけし橋を渡った場所にある。弥治郎という人がこの地に住みついたのが集落の始まりとされる。弥治郎こけしの特徴は、ろくろ模様が多用された大きな頭と胴体にあり、仙台藩内で最初に木地挽きが行われた七ヶ宿の流れを汲む。この辺りではそうした伝統を守りながら、今もこけしが作られていて、こけしの絵付け体験などもできる。
