温泉の名物

伊勢湾で最大の島、答志島産の塩ワカメ
答志島の和具漁港では、名物の塩蔵ワカメの生産が盛ん。約45の漁業者が80基ほどの筏で、ワカメを養殖している。答志島では伝統的な方法を守り、漁港で釜茹でしており、2月～4月頃、数十基の釜が並び、湯気とともに潮の香りが港全体に漂う。その風景は、環境省が選定した「かおり風景100選」にも選ばれている。この塩ワカメは、保存料など人工的なものは一切使っていないにも関わらず、1年は保存がきく。

温泉のあれこれ

織田水軍の将・九鬼嘉隆終焉の島
答志島は織田水軍の将、九鬼嘉隆の終焉の地。嘉隆は、海の浮き城と呼ばれた鳥羽城を築き、日本初の鉄張の軍船を建造。信長に抵抗する毛利水軍（村上水軍）を撃退したことで知られる。しかし、関ヶ原の戦いで、九鬼家の父と子が西軍・東軍に分かれて戦う。西軍の父・嘉隆は、敗戦後この島を最期の地に選び自刃。その首は遺言通り、鳥羽城を見渡せる丘の上に、胴部はその麓に息子の守隆の手で葬られ、首塚と胴塚として和具町に残る。
