人気のあしずり温泉郷土産あれこれ
「足摺亀おこし」は、地元で昔から食べられている菓子。さつまいもを角切りにして揚げ、水飴で固めた素朴な味。芋ケンピよりも硬くて甘く、亀の甲羅に見立ててこの名が付いた。「足摺椿油」は純粋椿油100％、ヤブ椿の実を原料とており、スキンケア、毛髪ケアなどに使う。「だしが良くでる宗田節」は、土佐清水が日本一の生産量を誇る宗田節を瓶詰めしたもの。醤油を入れて約2週間おいて香りを移してから、万能調味料として使う。

温泉のあれこれ

ジョン万次郎ゆかりの地、土佐清水
土佐清水市の中浜は、日本人として初めて合衆国の地を踏んだジョン万次郎の生誕地。漁に出かけて14歳で遭難し、合衆国の捕鯨船に助けられて渡米を志願。帰国後は海外での知識と経験を生かし、日米和親条約の締結など日米の架け橋として活躍。現在、土佐清水には万次郎生家が復元され、仮墓や万次郎記念碑、銅像などが建っている。そしてジョン万次郎資料館には直筆の英文字などの資料が展示され、「万次郎足湯」にもその名を残す。
