温泉のあれこれ

美しい別荘地の大磯に集った各界の巨人
大磯は1885年に海水浴場が開かれ、首都近郊の保養地として脚光を浴びた。1887年には初代内閣総理大臣の伊藤博文や山県有朋が屋敷や別邸を構え、東海道線が開通。ほか大隈重信や吉田茂など多くの総理大臣や、岩崎弥之助、三井高棟などの財界人、尾上菊五郎、中村吉右衛門などの歌舞伎俳優、島崎藤村などの文化人らが魅せられて居を構えた。また、岩崎弥太郎の孫・沢田美喜は孤児院「エリザベス・サンダース・ホーム」を開設した。
