温泉の名物

自然の恵みが育む霧島茶
天孫降臨の地・霧島は、山の息吹と清らかな水に恵まれている。さらに冷涼で適度な寒暖の差があることや、朝夕の霧がほどよく日光を遮るなど、緑茶栽培の適地となっている。霧島茶の本格栽培は、江戸初期にさかのぼるとされる。やや強めの渋みと、ほどよく深い甘味とコク、香りはやや薄いのが特徴。坂本龍馬が妻のお龍を伴って旅をしたことで知られる霧島で、2人も旅の途中で霧島茶を飲み、ほっと一息をついたといわれている。

温泉のあれこれ

坂本龍馬お龍夫妻の新婚旅行の地、霧島
寺田屋事件で負傷した幕末の風雲児、坂本龍馬が、西郷隆盛らの勧めで養生に訪れた地が鹿児島。鹿児島に着いた2人はさっそく霧島へ。「霧島山の方へ行（中略）しおひたしと云温泉に行」「陰見の滝其滝の布ハ五十間も落て、（中略）めづらしき所ナリ。此所に十日計も止りあそび、谷川の流にてうおおつり、短筒ピストヲルをもちて鳥をうちなど、まことにおもしろかし」とその感動ぶりを、姉の乙女に知らせている。
