温泉の名物

国指定の伝統工芸品「丸亀うちわ」
「丸亀うちわ」は、江戸初期に金比羅参詣の土産物として、渋うちわに「金」の文字印を入れたものが始まりとされる。天明年間には、丸亀藩江戸詰大目付瀬山登が、丸亀藩の下級武士の内職として奨励したこともあり、丸亀の代表的な地場産業として発展を続けた。今「丸亀うちわ」といえば、「男竹平柄」が一般的。現在の生産量は年間約8300万本、全国シェアの90％を誇り、1997年、国の伝統的工芸品に指定された。

温泉のあれこれ

金毘羅街道と太助灯籠
「太助灯籠」は、金毘羅詣での客で賑わった丸亀港にあるシンボル灯籠。旧金毘羅五街道・丸亀街道の出発点に当たり、琴平の高灯籠まで約12kmを、参拝客はこの太助灯籠を目印に入港した。太助灯籠は、江戸在住の人々（千人講）が浄財を出し合って1838年に完成。台座には「江戸講中」と、側面には寄進者や世話人1357人の名が刻まれている。寄進者の中で、最高額の80両を出した塩原太助にちなみ、太助灯籠と呼ばれるようになった。
