Tourist Attraction Information

This hot spring springs up halfway up Mt. Kurikoma. The most common route for climbing Mt. Kurikoma is via the Sukawa Course, which passes through the beautiful flower fields of Nagorigahara and Lake Showa.

Highlights

The amount of water that flows from the hot spring is 6,000 liters per minute, making it one of the largest in Japan. Because it is located on Takayama, the ultraviolet rays are strong, making it an ideal place for climatic therapy.

温泉の名物

天然のオンドル小屋「おいらん風呂」
須川温泉の旅館から5～6分登った所に、江戸時代から続く「おいらん風呂」がある。地熱を利用したいわゆるオンドル小屋で、蒸気の噴出孔にムシロを敷き、毛布で全身をくるみ、患部を蒸気に当てて寝そべる。湯治場として地元の人々や山仕事の人に愛されてきて、今も湯治客に人気の伝統的療法だ。ストレスの多い現代人の疲れた体と心を癒してくれる。

温泉のあれこれ

大人気の紅葉スポット栗駒山
標高1627.7mの栗駒山は、岩手、宮城、秋田、山形の4県にまたがる休火山で、須川温泉は栗駒山登山の発着地となっている。栗駒国定公園に指定され、原生的な天然林の区域を持つ栗駒山から焼石岳南方にかけては、「栗駒山・栃ヶ森山周辺森林生態系保護地域」。毎年5月に山開きが行われ、春から初夏にかけてはブナの新緑、夏は高山植物目当てに大勢の登山客が足を運ぶ。特に秋はカエデ、ナナカマド、ヤマウルシなどが色鮮やかだ。
