宗谷湾名産のタコは極上の味
稚内の宗谷湾周辺では「ミズダコ」が多く漁獲されている。水温が低く潮流も激しい北の海で豊富な餌に恵まれるため極上のタコが育ち、時に30kg以上もの大物も見られる。名産の大タコを生きたまま急速冷凍し、極薄くスライスしたものをさっと煮ていただく「タコしゃぶ」は稚内名物で、クセのない自然なタコの甘みと潮の味、コリコリした歯応えと広がる旨味に思わず感動が走る。名産地自慢のオツな味だ。

温泉のあれこれ

利尻富士を望む西の海岸で爽快ドライブ
稚内温泉のある稚内西海岸は、ノシャップ岬を南下し海に沿って続く20数kmの海岸で、広い大地と日本海が左右に広がる爽快なエリア。道道106号線は地球の丸さを感じながらドライブができる、爽やかなルートとしても知られる。礼文島や利尻富士が浮かぶ海を染めて沈む夕陽は感動的で、「夕日が丘パーキング」など撮影ポイントも数多い。ゴマフアザラシの越冬地があるほか、ハマナスやエゾカンゾウの見られるスポットも点在。
