温泉の名物

品揃え豊富な「湯鬼神」のお土産
湯の守り神「湯鬼神」として登別東IC出口に立つ高さ18mの歓迎鬼像や、温泉街の湯かけ鬼蔵、念仏鬼像たち。これら鬼のグッズが、土産品として評判となっている。昔と変わらぬデザインのロングセラー「鬼の手形」や、「鬼の目にも涙」などと書かれた「鬼ことわざ缶バッジ」、渋い「和タペストリー」、定番のストラップなどなど。なかでも、大・小2種類のサイズで4色選べる鬼の金棒「ねがいがかなう棒」は、女子高生たちに大人気だ。

温泉のあれこれ

アイヌの人たちに愛された歴史ある薬湯
古くからアイヌの人たちに薬湯として親しまれ、1845年には北海道の名付け親、松浦武四郎が訪れてその魅力をつづり、後には湯治の祖、滝本金蔵が温泉宿を建て道を整備し、今の基礎を築く。その後、日露戦争の傷病兵の保養地に指定され全国にその名が広まった。ここの地獄谷には、地獄の釜のふたが年に1度開き、赤鬼・青鬼を従えた閻魔大王が温泉街に現れるという言い伝えがあり、それに因む登別最大の祭りが「登別地獄まつり」だ。
