温泉の名物

温泉川と凍てつく大気が魅せる冬の宝石
川湯温泉はその名の通り温泉が川となって流れており、気温がマイナス10度以下になる厳寒時には、大気中で水分が凍り「細氷」となって舞う現象が起こりやすい。無数の氷粒である細氷は、光を受けるとキラキラと美しく反射するため、ダイヤモンドダストとも呼ばれ、冬の川湯の風物詩。「湯の川園地」では、繊細なダイヤモンドダストをイメージしたイルミネーションのほか、ダイヤモンドダストにちなんだイベントも企画される。

温泉のあれこれ

高度成長期の英雄、名横綱大鵬の出身地
川湯温泉で少年時代を過ごした第48代横綱大鵬の納谷幸喜氏は、南樺太で生まれ、戦争の混乱を逃れて苦難の中で弟子屈町に転入。定時制高校時代に二所ノ関部屋に紹介され、角界に入門した。優勝32回、6連覇2回、45連勝などの金字塔を打ち立てた大鵬関は、不滅の名横綱と今も讃えられる。2013年1月19日の逝去ののち、2月に国民栄誉賞を受賞。大鵬相撲記念館ではその軌跡を伝えており、往時の活躍を偲ぶファンが訪れている。
