冬のオホーツク海に現れる流氷を見学
北緯44度は季節海氷域の南限。東カラフト海流により南下した流氷が近づく1月下旬頃より、網走港から流氷観光船が連日出航する。船は南極観測船「しらせ」と同様、氷塊を船の重さで砕氷する方式で進み、目の前に広がる流氷の美しく神秘的な景観のほか、1mほどにもなる氷が割れる瞬間に放つ豪快な音と響きに歓声が沸く。ときに現れるオジロワシやアザラシなど、北の生き物の姿にも、自然の雄大さや命のたくましさを感じさせられる。
