奥利根の山と豊かな水が大自然を育む
利根川源流のある奥利根は、豊かな原生林や自然林に包まれ、野生動物が暮らす深山。冬は雪が深く、春の雪解け水が樹林を育み、広大な地域を潤す。豊富な水を活用するダムが築かれ、「ダム湖百選」のならまた湖や関東の水瓶・奥利根湖ほか、洞元湖や藤原湖も広がる。「日本百名山」のひとつで2000m級の谷川岳や、武尊山は登山でもおなじみ。高地では多くの高山植物が見られるほか、漆黒の夜空に広がる満天の星が心を打つ。

温泉のあれこれ

秘境の集落に伝わった奥州藤原落人伝説
1957年に建設された藤原湖はかつての藤原郷であり、湖底には民家159戸と田畑山林約150haが眠る。伝承では、源頼朝の奥州征伐に敗北し、平泉より逃れた藤原氏の一派がたどり着いて隠れ住んだといい、下界とは隔絶した秘境の地で、人々は熊や鹿などの山の恵みを食べ、厳しい自然に耐えて雄々しく暮らした。また、下流の湯檜曽温泉にも、陸奥の豪族・安倍貞任の子孫・阿部孫八郎による開湯伝承がある。
