安心素材の生どら焼きの味わいが大評判
みなかみ町内の国道291号線沿いに「小荒井製菓」がある。評判の「生どら焼き」は、ふんわり感の強い繊細な生地に、自家製餡に生クリームを練り込んだ小豆クリームが上品に口溶け、心奪われるおいしさ。北海道産小豆や契約農家直送の純国産鶏の卵、谷川連峰の清水など、素材からこだわり、誰もに愛される名物となっている。抹茶玉露やいちご、ガナッシュショコラ、チーズ、バター、モンブランほか、種類も多く食べ比べも楽しい。

温泉のあれこれ

文豪たちに愛され著作にも登場した温泉
1936年8月、パビナール中毒と肺の不調に苦しんでいた太宰治は、川端康成のすすめで谷川温泉を訪れている。6月に砂子屋書房より発行された処女小説集「晩年」が第3回芥川賞を逃し、失意に沈む太宰は、谷川温泉で「創生期」を著した。青く輝く谷川岳を望み、山麓を洗う渓流のせせらぎが響くこの地は、太宰の記憶に深く刻まれ、後年に発表した小説「姥捨」の舞台として登場した。温泉入口の道路沿いには著作を記念した碑が建つ。
