Tourist Attraction Information

We recommend taking a stroll around the cobalt-colored lake of Mt. Shirane Yugama and the Hon-Shirane mountain sightseeing course. In winter, you can enjoy professional skiing.

Highlights

A famous hot spring located above the clouds at an altitude of about 1,800m. There are 27 types of spring water, and the thick, milky white and yellow sulfurous springs are very pleasant to look at, set against the unique scenery of this volcanic region.

温泉の名物

大地の息吹を感じる温泉近くの噴火口跡
万座温泉は草津白根山の西の山腹。万座バスターミナルの前にある名勝「空吹（からぶき）」は、かつての白根山の噴火口の跡。一帯は硫黄の匂いが強く立ち込め、硫黄で黄色く染まった岩場の裂け目から、雨水や地下水などの水蒸気と硫化水素などの火山性ガスが吹き出し、白くたなびいている。吹き出し口付近は安全のため立ち入り禁止だが、手前の高台には展望台が設けられ、草木のない岩場から噴気がのぼる様子がじっくり観察できる。

温泉のあれこれ

秋の嬬恋高原を駆け上る自転車レース
「Koihill 嬬恋・万座ハイウェーヒルクライム」は、秋の嬬恋高原を舞台に、自動車専用道路の万座ハイウェーをサイクリストに開放し行なわれる、一般参加のヒルクライムレース。コースは約18km、標高差約912m、平均勾配が約5％と、一般レースの中では穏やかなため、女性選手や初心者も参加しやすく、2013年は950名が出走した。完走者への名産の振る舞いがあり、温泉も利用できる立地のため、観戦も含め、家族で楽しめるイベントだ。
