草津節に合わせ、伝統の温泉文化を体験
江戸時代から伝わる草津独特の入浴法の「時間湯」は、酸性の泉質と高い湯温を利用した温泉療法。水を使わず湯の成分をそのままに、理想の温度に下げるための「湯もみ」は不可欠で、草津節などの湯もみ唄に合わせ、賑やかに行なわれた。「熱の湯」では、湯もみと踊りのショーのほか「湯もみ体験」も行なわれており、長い歴史に培われた草津の温泉文化の一端に直に触れ、感じることができる。

温泉のあれこれ

江戸で人気の観光地として滑稽本にも登場
江戸時代、草津温泉は将軍徳川吉宗が用いた「御汲上げの湯」として知られ、「温泉番付」でも常に東の最上位に格付けされる人気を誇った。庶民が泰平を謳歌したこの時代は、旅への憧れを誘いながら続く軽妙なストーリーにより十返舎一九の「東海道中膝栗毛」が大ヒット。1819年に草津を訪れた一九は、翌年「上州草津温泉道中続膝栗毛十篇」を発表。弥次喜多コンビが今も残る共同浴場を舞台に珍道中を繰り広げる続編で人気を博した。
