温泉のあれこれ

土湯の俳諧文化と土湯連
江戸時代の文化・文政の頃から明治初期にかけて、全国で俳諧ブームが起きた。土湯でも旅館や商店の旦那衆を中心に「土湯連」と呼ばれる俳諧同人ができたほどで、時の藩主も参加したとされる。町の中を流れる荒川に船を浮かべ、芸者を傍らに置き、風流に和歌を詠んで楽しんだ。その土湯連とメンバーの鳩麿によって温泉街の風景や景観8ヶ所が選定され、詠まれた俳諧集が「温泉八景」。これが今の「土湯八景」の原形となっている。
