温泉の名物

江戸末期創業のようかんの老舗
創業1819年、松本家の「水ようかん」は東山温泉土産の人気商品。温泉街に店を構え、湯治客や行商人の休憩所として、生活用品を商いながら和菓子を出していた。そして2代目の時代から水ようかんを本格的に作るようになり、それが評判となってようかん一筋となった。1粒1粒厳選された地元会津産と北海道産の小豆と、厳しい寒さの信州で作られた極上品の寒天を使った水ようかんは、昔から変わらぬ風味で、甘さを抑えた上品な味わい。

温泉のあれこれ

会津藩の藩湯であった歴史ある温泉
約1300年前、行基によって発見されたと伝わる東山温泉。藩政時代は「天寧寺の湯」と呼ばれ、湯治場として栄えた。会津藩の指定保養所となっていた「きつね湯」は、明治になって平田家が引き継ぎ「向瀧」となり、建物は、国の登録有形文化財となっている。ほかにも会津藩主松平氏の別荘だった「新瀧」など、歴史ある旅館が湯川沿いに建ち並ぶ。幕末には、新選組副長・土方歳三が傷の湯治に訪れたことでも知られる。
