十和田湖名物のヒメマス料理
かつては魚が棲まないといわれた十和田湖。十和田湖の養魚事業の先駆者・和井内貞行が私財を投げ打ち、22年の努力の結果、1905年にヒメマスの養殖に成功。今やヒメマス料理は十和田湖の名物となった。身が引き締まり、臭みがなく、淡水魚でありながら脂がのり、上品な食味を持つ。料理としては塩焼きやフライが定番だが、寄生虫がいないため、生で食せる刺身が秀逸。その日獲れた天然物しか使わないという、こだわりの店も多い。

軍用ゴムボートでのツアー
十和田湖では軍用ゴムボートでのアドベンチャーボートツアーが人気。二重カルデラ湖のため断崖絶壁に囲まれ、陸上からは一部分しか見られないが、このツアーでは特別保護区を探検できる。観光船としては日本最速の40ノット超が楽しめ、特別な装備も不要で、濡れることもない。カモシカや熊などの野生動物との遭遇率は8割以上。古代遺跡、原生林のイトムカの入り江、伝説のキリスト像など見どころも豊富だ。
