温泉の名物

総ヒバ造りの80坪もの巨大な名物湯殿
標高約925mの高地にあり、300年前から地元の人から湯治場として親しまれてきた酸ヶ湯温泉。この温泉の名物は「ヒバ千人風呂」。160畳はあるという湯小屋は、総ヒバ造りで柱が1本もない。乳白色の湯が、こんこんと湧き出ていて、今まで湯が途切れたことは1回もないという。熱の湯、冷の湯、四分六分の湯、湯滝など5つの浴槽があり、すべて混浴。男も女も屈託なく入浴を楽しんでいる。

温泉のあれこれ

のんびり座って、お尻を温める温泉療法
東北大学の高山植物園分園から下っていくと、渓谷沿いの東屋の下に「まんじゅうふかし」と呼ばれる場所がある。「まんじゅう」は、津軽弁で女性の下半身を意味する。地中から噴き出している熱い蒸気の上に木のベンチが置いてあり、その上に着衣のまま腰をかけてお尻を温める仕組み。自然を眺め、のんびり座っていると下半身がポカポカしてくる。子宝の湯、若返りの湯などと呼ばれていて、冷え症や痔に効くとされる。
