北山崎は複雑に入り組んだ三陸海岸を代表する景勝地です。
およそ約8kmにわたり高さ約200mにも及ぶ断崖が屏風のように切り立った岩が続く姿は、別称"海のアルプス"と呼ばれているほどの絶景です。
北山崎は、（公財）日本交通公社の全国観光資源評価「自然資源・海岸の部」で最高ランクの特Ａ級に格付けされた景勝地です。
