Be sure to look not only at the front, which features the main characters of the theme, but also at the back, known as the okurie. The change in their expressions before and after they're lit is also fascinating.

There are various theories about the origins of the Aomori Nebuta Festival, but the most widely accepted links it to Nebuta Nagashi, a Tanabata custom practiced since ancient times. People transferred drowsiness and evil spirits onto dolls and lanterns and set them adrift on rivers and the sea to pray for good health, and this custom is believed to have been handed down while changing form over time. There are also several theories about where the word "nebuta" comes from. One holds that it derives from "nebutai" (sleepy), referring to the drowsiness felt during summer farm work; another says it means "a light that drives away sleep." These customs merged with Tanabata traditions and lantern culture brought over from China, gradually giving rise to the prototype of today's Nebuta Festival.
In the past, it was a small event in which people walked through town carrying lit lanterns. Once electricity came into use, however, the nebuta grew steadily larger and developed into powerful three-dimensional figures. Carefully handed down by local people ever since, it is now beloved as Aomori's signature summer festival, with giant nebuta parading through the city.

Access
From Tokyo, take the Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori Station, then transfer to a local train and get off at JR Aomori Station.

Tips
Traffic restrictions and heavy crowds are common during the festival, and nearby accommodations are hard to book. If you want to reduce the hassle of getting around and making arrangements, joining a tour is a good option.

The Aomori Nebuta Festival is usually held for six days, from Aug. 2 to 7. The main schedule is as follows.

• Night Parade
The main event of the Aomori Nebuta Festival, in which large nebuta parade through central Aomori City at night. Once lit, the nebuta's expressions and colors stand out even more vividly in three dimensions, making them truly spectacular. With the shouts of the haneto mingling with the sounds of the hayashi musicians, you can feel the festival's unique energy and atmosphere with your whole body.

• Daytime Parade
Held on the final day, this daytime parade lets you take your time admiring the shapes and colors of the nebuta. The atmosphere is calmer than at night, and the crowds are relatively light. Because the details are easy to see, it's also great for taking photos.

• Sea Parade
A special parade held on the night of the final day, in which only 4 of the award-winning nebuta chosen by the judges are carried by boat across Aomori Port. The glow of the nebuta reflected on the water combines with fireworks from the Aomori Fireworks Festival, held at the same time, to create a magical scene. It's a moving moment and a fitting finale to the Aomori Nebuta Festival.

The Aomori Nebuta Festival can be watched freely from the roadside, so you can enjoy the spectacular parade without a reservation. Being able to drop by casually and move around at your own pace are advantages unique to free viewing. On the other hand, the festival gets extremely crowded, and you may need to wait from early on to secure a spot with a good view. Since you'll basically be standing, watching for a long time can be physically demanding. Nearby hotels may also sell out early during the festival. If you plan to watch from the roadside, it's important to check accommodations, crowd conditions and traffic restrictions in advance and plan your schedule accordingly.

You can watch the Aomori Nebuta Festival freely from the roadside, but the festival gets very crowded, and you'll often end up standing for hours. You may even get to see breathtaking performances up close, as large nebuta spin right in front of you or suddenly rush toward the audience. You can take a good look at the fine expressions and colors of the nebuta, as well as the movements of the haneto and hikite (pullers), making it a highly satisfying experience even for first-time visitors.

The giant nebuta are moved entirely by hand by people called hikite (pullers). Watching them move a nebuta weighing about 3.5 tons back and forth and spin it 360 degrees without any engine is a breathtaking sight. Guiding them is the sensu-mochi, the commander who stands in front of the float and signals directions with a whistle and the movements of a fan. Keep an eye on their finely tuned teamwork, too.
Adding to the excitement around the nebuta are the hayashi, who keep the rhythm with drums and flutes, and the haneto dancers. Dressed in mostly white costumes adorned with bells, the haneto leap to chants of "Rassera, rassera," and they can be called the very symbol of the Nebuta Festival.

During the Aomori Nebuta Festival, nebuta huts called Rasseland are set up, and the nebuta are kept here when they're not parading. It's a rare chance to see the unlit nebuta in daylight and observe their shapes, colors and expressions up close. If you're lucky, you may even see nebuta being repaired. Because nebuta look very different before and after they're lit, we recommend comparing the two.

The Aomori Nebuta Festival is a rare festival where even tourists can take part as haneto dancers. Anyone can join as long as they wear the official haneto costume, and some tours even provide a full costume set. Actually leaping around the nebuta and chanting as you move along is a special memory you can't get just by watching.
There's no advance registration or check-in, but please note that you can't participate unless you're wearing the official haneto costume. You can buy the costume at department stores, but if it's your first time, we recommend asking a shop that offers rental and dressing services.

On the final day of the Aomori Nebuta Festival, 4 large nebuta, including the Grand Prize winner chosen by the judges, are loaded onto boats for a sea parade in Aomori Port. According to one theory, nebuta are a variation of the lantern floating of the Tanabata festival, and Nebuta Nagashi, the custom of setting lanterns adrift on Tanabata night to pray for good health, is thought to have led to today's sea parade.

The Aomori Nebuta Festival goes ahead rain or shine. On rainy days, the nebuta are covered with plastic sheets, giving them a different look. Haneto leaping with all their might in the rain and nebuta reflected in puddles make for unique rainy-day festival scenes worth seeing. The viewing seats have no roof, so it's a good idea to bring a raincoat. Also, if you visit Rasseland around midday when rain is forecast, you might catch the rare sight of plastic sheets being put over the nebuta.
