Kumamoto Castle
熊本城（イメージ）
名将加藤清正(かとうきよまさ)が幾多の実戦の経験を生かし、慶長6年(1601年)から7年の歳月と、心血を注いで築城したものです。
城郭の形式は、梯郭式平山城。大小天守閣をはじめ、櫓(やぐら)49、櫓門18、城門29を数え、城郭の広さは約98ha(東京ドーム21個分)、周囲約5.3kmにも及ぶ豪壮雄大な構えで、清正流石垣と呼ばれる優美な石垣と、自然の地形を巧みに利用した高度な築城技術で知られています。石垣は、始め緩やかな勾配のものが上部に行くにしたがって垂直に近くなる「武者返し」と呼ばれる形状の石垣を多用しています。
1877年西南戦争で一部焼失しましたが、1933年に熊本城全域を史跡に、建造物を国宝に指定され、1960年熊本城天守閣が復元され現在の熊本城となっています。
