太陽神アマテラスオオミカミは弟スサノヲノミコトの悪行にお怒りになり、天岩戸に隠れてしまいます。世の中から光が失われ、真っ暗になりました。八百万の神々は、アマテラスオオミカミにどうにか岩戸から出てきてもらおうと、「天安河原」で話し合いました。岩戸の前でアメノウズメノミコトが舞うと、神々は拍手喝采。アマテラスオオミカミは様子が気になり、少し岩戸を開けました。その隙にタヂカラオノミコトが岩戸を投げ、アマテラスオオミカミに出てきていただき、またこの世に光が戻りました。
反省したスサノヲノミコトはその後出雲の国へ行き、八俣大蛇を退治します。
