What is Takayama Festival?
Takayama Matsuri is a general term that refers to two festivals, the spring "Sanno Matsuri (held on Apr. 14 and 15)" at Hie Shrine and the autumn "Hachiman Festival (held on Oct. 9 and 10)" at Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine, and is said to have originated in the late 16th and 17th centuries. It is one of the three major beauty festivals in Japan.
You can see wonderful street food art, such as karakuri offerings that show off skillful puppet movements and gimmicked return wheels. Twelve gorgeous food stalls add to the Hida Takayama city.

Things to note when enjoying the festival

The area around the festival site (especially the area around the Karakuri floats) will be very crowded. Pickpockets have also been reported, so please be careful with your belongings.

It gets cold at night, so please be sure to take precautions against the cold.

It is especially dark during festivals at night, so please be careful not to fall into the drains. Some drains do not have covers.
It may be useful to bring a flashlight or similar.
春の高山祭「山王祭」
(4月14・15日開催)
長い冬が終わり、高山に春の訪れを実感させてくれる「山王祭」は、旧高山城下町南半分の氏神様である日枝神社(山王様)の例祭です。毎年4月14日・15日に祭の舞台となる安川通りの南側・上町には、「山王祭」の屋台組の宝である屋台12台が登場します。うち3台がからくり奉納を行うほか、祭行事では賑やかな伝統芸能も繰り広げられます。また、祭と桜の開花が重なると、更に美しい景色を見ることができます。
秋の高山祭「八幡祭」
(10月9・10日開催)
高山の秋の終わりを感じ、また秋の実りの感謝を実感できる「八幡祭」は、旧高山城下町北半分の氏神様である桜山八幡宮の例祭です。
毎年10月9日・10日になると、安川通りの北側・下町に「八幡祭」だけの11台の屋台が登場します。屋台が町を巡る曳き廻しや布袋台のからくり奉納などの伝統的な祭行事を楽しむことができます。
