Japan's Fireworks Culture | 'Dedication Fireworks' Launched with Wishes

The official name of the Katakai Festival is "Katakai Festival: Asahara Shrine Autumn Grand Festival Dedication Fireworks," a traditional event with a history of about 400 years in which Fireworks is dedicated to the deities enshrined at Asahara Shrine.
Unlike typical Fireworks Festival, the Fireworks of Katakai is a "Dedication Fireworks" dedicated to Asahara Shrine. It is launched through donations and investments from individuals, companies, and volunteer groups nationwide.
Therefore, before the Fireworks is launched, the name of the dedicator and warm messages such as "Child 's birthday," "wedding celebration," "coming-of-age celebration," "memorial memorial service," and sometimes "gratitude to the 'favorite'" are announced, making it a rare Fireworks Festival even in Japan. In terms of releasing feelings into the night sky, it may be somewhat similar to Taiwan's sky lantern display.
There are no Fireworks performances or Wide Star Mine Fireworks that are played in sync with music. Rather than enjoying the artistry and dynamism of Fireworks, the Katakai Festival is about experiencing the local Fireworks culture while feeling the heartfelt feelings of the people put into a single Fireworks.

What are Japan's largest 'positive 3 shakudama (36-inch firework shell)' and the world's largest 'positive 4 shakudama (48-inch firework shell)'?

"Shaku" is a long-standing unit of length used in Japan, and "12-inch Firework Shell" represents the size of a Fireworks ball. "True 4 shakudama (48-inch firework shell)" means a Fireworks truly four shaku in size, and Katakai was the first in Japan to launch "3 shakudama (36-inch firework shell)" and "4 shakudama (48-inch firework shell)," making it truly the root of Fireworks culture.

It takes 15~20 minutes from the parking lot to reach designated viewing area. There is an admission ticket check gate just before the designated viewing area area, where each person checks their admission ticket one by one. The designated viewing area is set up in a terraced field shape facing the launch site of the Fireworks, with the front higher and the rear lower. It is a flat space with plywood laid on the framework of an iron bar; there are no chairs or mats, but you can take off your shoes and sit comfortably.
If you have an admission ticket, you are free to enter and exit through the entrance gate. If you get lost, designated viewing area The tall lantern at the entrance has seat symbols like "Na" and "Ni" written on it, so using these as a landmark will give you peace of mind.

If you have time before the Fireworks launch, we recommend exploring the highlights around the venue.
At the main venue of the Fireworks Festival, Asahara Shrine, the Fireworks of the 'True 4 shakudama (48-inch firework shell)' is on display. Since it's a life-size replica that looks exactly like the real thing, don't worry, as it doesn't contain gunpowder. Staff members will offer commemorative photo services.
About a 5-minute walk from the designated viewing area area, there is also a plaza displaying life-sized launch tubes, making it a must-visit spot to experience the scale of the Fireworks you are about to see.

Fireworks Festival Opening | The Featured Fireworks That Energized the Venue

【19:30】
The launch of Fireworks has finally begun! Unlike the "glamorous entertainment shows" like Taipei 101 Countdown Fireworks in Taiwan, the Katakai Festival is "an art that lets you slowly enjoy each light and sound, and the lingering aftertaste." Highlights include the large Fireworks called "12-inch Firework Shell" and the uniquely shaped Fireworks.
For the 'Dedication Fireworks,' after announcing the names and messages of those who made the offerings, the Fireworks is launched...... This is the style in which the festival progresses.

【20:30】 【21:30】
Katakai is known as the birthplace of Japan's first launch of the "Positive 3 shakudama (36-inch firework shell)," with four launches over two days.
The moment the white flowers filled my view, I felt a low "thud!" echoing in my stomach a little later. That sound echoed through the surrounding mountains, creating triple and quadruple resonances that approached me—a unique experience unique to Katakai in the mountains.
On this day, the launch was held twice, and the venue erupted in loud cheers and applause.

【21:45】
Katakai In town, alumni who have graduated from Katakai junior high schools form a gathering and dedicate Starmine fireworks at ages 20, 33, 42, 50, and 60. Among the highlights, the launch of the 'extra-large Starmine fireworks' dedicated by alumni at 60 is one of the highlights of the first day.

For about six minutes, 100 Fireworks were launched without interruption, and cheers of 'Get up! Get up!' cheers were flying everywhere from the venue. This year's extra-large Starmine fireworks donation is said to be about 20 million yen...!!

【22:00】
The Fireworks Festival, which lasted just under three hours, finally reaches its climax! It was the launch of the world's largest 'positive 4 shakudama (48-inch firework shell)'.
A single streak of white light seemed to stretch high into the sky, and with a fierce glow, a huge white radiating flower bloomed in full glory. Then, countless small flowers bloomed, changing colors to green, blue, purple, and red, and finally, they fell like willow branches, trailing their tails.
Immediately after, shockwaves and deep bass surged through my body, and the sparks flew with the echoing sound of "scattered and scattered" echoing from all directions. It was truly a special experience, as if I was enveloped in the light and sound of Fireworks.

At the "Katakai Festival," the types of 4 shakudama (48-inch firework shell) launched on the first and second days differed: this year, the "Ascension Silver Dragon Golden Sudare Small Floating Pattern" was dedicated on the first day, and the "Ascension Silver Dragon Golden Thousand-Fireworks Flower Two-Tiered Bloom" was dedicated on the second day.

After the show | What time will we arrive at the hotel amidst heavy traffic?

【22:05】
Fireworks finished. Spectators began to leave one after another, and the aisles became extremely crowded. The entrances to the designated viewing area area were narrow, so people started moving from their seats in order. Because it was dark, we were careful not to forget or lose anything.

【22:37】
We walked back to the parking lot on a crowded, dark road. The bus waited for the tour participants until they returned, so we were able to leave at a relaxed pace. Everyone boarded the bus and left the Fireworks venue.
This time, no participants got lost, and we were able to depart about 40 minutes after the festival ended.

From the window of the bus heading to the hotel, I could see a long line of people waiting for the public transportation shuttle bus. Because of the crowds, it's not uncommon to have to wait over an hour. In that regard, with a tour, if you take the chartered bus, you can relax and be transported to the hotel while soaking in the afterglow of the Fireworks, which was very comfortable.

【23:45】
Accommodation Arrived at the previous 'Hotel Route-Inn Tsubame-Sanjo Station Front.' After picking up the key in the lobby, all that was left was to enter your room and rest! All participants on this tour could relax comfortably in single rooms.

Katakai Before Going to See the Festival|
Examining the Four Walls

The Four Walls Part (1)
Accommodation | Ojiya Nagaoka Areas Guaranteed to Be Full

Hotels around Ojiya City Niigata Prefecture, where the Katakai Festival is held, and around Nagaoka City, a major nearby city, begin to fill up with reservations months before the festival date.
Because reservations by local regulars and stakeholders often fill up early, it is extremely difficult to secure a ticket on your own at the last minute. Even if you book a hotel in a slightly farther area, you must secure a way to get around late at night.

The Four Walls Part (2)
Reserved viewing seat | Advance reservations are too difficult

If you want to fully experience the overwhelming scale of the 4 shakudama (48-inch firework shell), we recommend watching from the "Reserved viewing seat," the closest to the launch site. The program, which lasts just under three hours, can be enjoyed comfortably while seated. However, arranging this designated viewing area on your own is extremely difficult.

Online reservations are not possible: You need to download and fill out the Japanese application form and apply by "fax or mail." The hurdle for procedures from overseas is quite high.

Large units: designated viewing area is the minimum unit for "one slot (capacity of 8 people)." For 1 to 2 individual travelers, both the cost and the slot are too large. *25,300 yen per slot (8 people / 1-day pass)

Same-day tickets are first-come, first-served: Same-day tickets are sold at the Traditional ground-sheet seating (designated viewing area) central entrance starting at 9:00 AM for 5,500 yen per seat, but since it's first-come, first-served, it's uncertain whether you can get a good designated viewing area. You need to plan so you can arrive on the day of the festival in the morning.

The Four Walls (Part 3)
Return | Seeing the 4 shakudama (48-inch firework shell) After finishing the tour, it's difficult to take public transportation home.

The climax, the world's largest "positive 4 shakudama (48-inch firework shell)," launches around 10:00 PM.
After 22:05, when the Fireworks ends, long lines form at public shuttle bus stops heading from the venue to the nearest station or major cities for passengers returning home. Due to road congestion, there is a possibility of missing the last train or Shinkansen. It is also difficult to call a taxi yourself late at night, making securing the return trip the biggest challenge.

The fourth of the four walls
Language | Announcements and signs within the venue are in Japanese only.

Katakai Because the festival is a traditional "dedication Fireworks" rooted in the community, it is less multilingual than typical events held in city centers. There may be moments of confusion or trouble during travel or on-site issues.
