In early November, you may also see Kappa Bridge lightly covered in frost, and “muhyo”—a thin frost coating on trees that sparkles in the morning sun. Autumn colors in Kamikochi begin gradually around late September, and usually reach their peak from mid-October to late October. Broadleaf trees begin turning red/yellow around mid-October. Japanese larch (karamatsu) turns golden from late October to early November. As the season nears the closing period, you may even see fallen larch needles coloring the ground. Because timing changes depending on weather and temperature, it’s recommended to check live cameras before your visit.

In autumn, morning and evening cold becomes much more intense. Minimum temperatures can fall to single digits (°C) by late September, and it may even reach below 0°C in October. In November, daytime highs are around 10°C, and the wind feels very cold. September often has rain due to typhoons. November can bring full-scale snowfall. October is relatively stable, but mountain weather can change quickly—so rain gear is essential, and it’s important to choose clothing with flexibility even on sunny days.

Kappa Bridge is the iconic suspension bridge of Kamikochi. It is a famous photo spot with the clear Azusa River, vivid autumn leaves, and the towering Hotaka mountains behind it. The view from the bridge—Hotaka peaks and the river wrapped in autumn colors—is a must-see. This area is also the busiest in Kamikochi, with hotels and restaurants nearby.

Taisho Pond was formed by a volcanic eruption of Mount Yake. On calm days, the pond reflects the mountains and autumn leaves, creating beautiful “mirror” scenery. The area around the pond looks like a sandy beach. This “white sand” is actually collapsed granite, and the distinctive blue color of Taisho Pond and the Azusa River is said to appear blue due to the reflection from this granite.

Located below Mount Myojin, Myojin Pond is a sacred area of Hotaka Shrine. It was once called “Kagami Pond” (Mirror Pond). As the surrounding evergreen forest turns golden, the clear water beautifully reflects the scenery. Layering is the key for walking in Kamikochi in autumn. Bring fleece, a down jacket, or a windbreaker, and make sure you have an outer layer that is waterproof and windproof. If you start early in the morning or visit near November, prepare warm accessories such as gloves, a hat, and a neck warmer. Because you may warm up while walking, breathable inner layers are recommended. For shoes, choose hiking or trekking shoes, or sturdy shoes with non-slip soles. Don’t forget rain gear, a spare battery, water, and light snacks for your walk.

Around Kamikochi you can choose from many accommodation styles, including hotels, mountain huts, hot spring inns, as well as campsites and cottages where you can enjoy camping without bringing equipment. Spending a night in the mountains lets you experience things that are hard to enjoy on a day trip—sunset, the quiet of early morning, a sky full of stars, and peaceful extra time. Kamikochi also offers many spectacular views you may miss on a day trip, so consider an overnight stay.

Thanks to the high altitude and clear air, you can see countless stars on a clear night. When you first step outside, your eyes may not be used to the darkness, so take time to adjust before looking up. Even with hotel lights you can see many stars, but if you want to see the Milky Way, bring a headlamp and walk to a place where the hotel lights do not reach. The silhouette of the mountains and the star-filled sky is a special view that only overnight guests can experience.

Another advantage of staying overnight is a morning walk. You may see morning mist over Taisho Pond and the Hotaka range lit by sunrise—scenes unique to early hours. It can be very cold, but after sunrise the warmth of the sun and the crisp autumn air feel refreshing. After enjoying sunrise, it’s also a great idea to walk around before the area becomes crowded.

Kamikochi has private car restrictions, so regular vehicles cannot enter directly.

A common route is to take the Nagano Expressway (Matsumoto IC), or come from the Gifu side via Hirayu, park at Sawando Parking or Hirayu Parking, and then take a shuttle bus or taxi to the Kamikochi Bus Terminal.

From Shinjuku Station, take the Limited Express Azusa or a highway bus to Matsumoto Station. From Matsumoto, take the Alpico Kamikochi Line to Shin-Shimashima Station, then take a route bus (reservation required) to the Kamikochi Bus Terminal.
There are also direct buses (reservation required) from Shinjuku/Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, although services are limited.

Because autumn foliage season can be crowded for both buses and taxis, it is safer to plan early departures, reserve parking in advance, and allow extra travel time.
